Jerome Public's teen area rocks!

Jerome's new sound dome!A highlight of the newly remodeled Jerome Public Library has to be the new teen area. The library now has a dedicated space for teens, something that was lacking before the expansion. This area has a new “sound dome” where teens can select--by remote control-- from among  300 CDs and enjoy listening to their choices under the dome where the sound stays put.

The photo at the right shows (left to right) me and Erin McCusker along with Tina Cherry, Jerome Public Library’s Teen Advisor, posing as young adults under the sound dome. How cool is that? The library’s teen advisory group funded the sound dome and other improvements in the new space, including a light-up reader board and new displays and posters.

Tina reports that the space-age, silver platinum-colored bar height bistro is pretty cool. The hydraulic, adjustable scoop stools sit around the table under the "parabolic sound dome". The music is isolated as it is directed down through a speaker under the dome. Traditional headphones tend to get lost or broken and the sound dome just looks fun. The local Optimist Club is donating some money to help the teens buy more music for the 300-CD changer sound system. They are also actively looking for other donations, so download your CDs onto your iPod or MP3 and send them your CDs. They like old stuff too (or they gladly accept checks).

The teens and staff are working to add a fibor optic night sky to give the impression of a space skylight and are raising funds for a new sign for the area dubbed "The Flight Deck" to match their space-age feel.

I'd love to see more photos and ideas for teen spaces from other libraries!

Great photo and post, Stephanie! I'm jealous of Jerome's "sound dome" and hope that we'll be able to get one here at the Ada Community Library eventually. The new teen area at Jerome looks great -- if I'm ever in the area, I'm definitely going to have to stop by and chill under that "sound dome" for awhile. Something I've been dreaming of lately for our teen space would be video game console setup like they've got on demo in various electronics stores. Wouldn't Digital Natives be happy if they could play video games in the library? At the very least, we'd definitely be a more happening place to hang out!

That sounds like an awesome teen space. One I'd like to hang out in myself. It's exciting to see the results when given the chace to dream up new spaces. As libraries, we need to create places people want to be. We especially need to create fun, welcoming, and engaging places for teens - who may not have another safe, free place to go.

BIG NEWS! A very generous company that manufactures restaurant booths is MAKING and DONATING two singles and two doubles (three booths) for the Flight Deck! They sent us vinyl samples and staff and teens who dropped in during the week voted on their favorite. My husband is making the tables for the booths, which will match the bistro set under the dome. During our remodel construction, the YAC and I researched and developed a plan for the Flight Deck. The booths are an expensive item that we didn't think we'd see for at least another year. Who knows when we'll be able to afford the other elements on our list -- but it is very exciting to see the space come together one piece at a time. Our current status: "We're kind of a big deal!"
