IM and MySpace continue to be blocked at EITC Library

I've been enjoying the blogs about IMing and MySpace but I continue to be frustrated about using these as the IT dept here at EITC has blocked these (and will not consider unblocking.) 

So! we will not be able to use these options here, and hope that other SPLATTERS will continue to post to the LILI Splat blog, email messages, and even LIBIdaho listserv!  The listserv has a huge readership..

We run into the same issue with IMing being blocked at the Idaho Commission for Libraries. Fortunately, we can use Meebo through a web browser to get around this restriction. Meebo uses the same port (port 80) as regular internet traffic. IT staff will never block this port because it would mean no websites would be allowed to come through. Unless that particular site is blocked, Meebo should work. I know IT doesn't like to hear things like this, but there are ways to get around My Space blocking. There are several free services available that allow you to use a proxy server. Basically, this means that all your Internet traffic is being routed through somebody else's server (usually unfiltered). This method requires a little technical know how because it requires the user to change some Internet Connection settings. However, there are several websites that give you the same ability without having to do any configuration. Basically, you go to one of these websites and tell it which site you want to visit. It then goes out (unblocked) using their servers and retrieves that page. This page is then displayed to you but your network thinks that you never left the original site. The bottom line is the more IT trys to lock things down, the more people look for alternative methods to get around these restrictions. Doing a simple Google search has made it easy to find tutorials on how to bypass just about any IT obstacle.

However, I'll second Eric's advice -- route around the blockage if you can. Meebo is an excellent way to IM even if the normal channels are blocked. And proxies are an excellent way to get around particular websites being blocked. Unfortunately, these interim steps are necessary until IT throws in the towel and realizes it can't control the future. Good luck! Please let us know what other SPLAT-ty things you're doing at your library that don't require unrestricted access to the Internet.

question. my computer lets me go to whatever site i want to. but then when i want to go to myspace it doesnt work. it says that the page cant be displayed and all this other stuff. i've reset my settings and have looked into every possible problem that could be causing the page to be blocked. Nothing has been working. Just wondering if there is anything else i can do before completely giving up. I dont know if it because of my verizon connection or what. But no one else with verizon seems to be having a problem. Thankssss

go to fetch.nu on a school computer && there will be a link for it && you can click on that. We got to it through our school computers like that for about a month && then some dumb person got caught doing it so they blocked up. Or you can search on google how to get around your schools proxy server. && if you have Windows XP at your school you can just creat a link on ur explorer windo right under your address bar "customize Link" tab will let you do it. Or you could just hack into the system && unblock it but that takes a few hours && you have to know what your doing. You could figure it out with google too. But you can be suspended for it too or even kicked out of school. Trust me I know :]

I would poke around for proxy-servers. Perhaps one will help you. There's also always the option of using a computer that isn't blocked, whether it's a friend's or a local library's. Let us know if you succeed in finding something that works.
